White Tower Miniatures - New Medieval Knights
Review taken from 'Casting Around'
My interview with Matthew Thair in TSC 29 included a preview of his new series of ‘Ivanhoe’ tournament knights, launched by Matthew at the London show in June. For those not familiar with the story, Wilfred of Ivanhoe takes part in a tournament to challenge the supporters of Prince John, who’s up to his usual tricks while his big brother is imprisoned in Austria.
The photos should give a good idea of the pick and mix approach Matthew has adopted for these new figures. There are two different rider torsos (one upright, one leaning forward), a separate pair of rider legs, ten different heads, two different arms with lances, an arm capable of holding a sword, mace or axe, four different shields, and three different horses. This choice of parts can produce a wide variety of mounted knights, pretty much to a customer’s specification. For example, in addition to the four named knights for the tournament, it is easy to produce a mounted king (Matthew obviously had Richard the Lionheart in mind), a crusader or any other mounted knight of the period.
The component parts to make up a figure are nicely cast and assembly is straightforward. A ‘dry run’ is recommended before assembly and you should be prepared to use a bit of filler, particularly on the horses. Once assembled, the figures are quite heavy and one of the stronger adhesives is likely to produce the best results. By the time you read this, different versions of the assembled and painted knights should be viewable on Matthew’s website.
White Tower castings measure 58mm approx. Tournament knights and other ‘multipart’ castings in any pose cost £13 (£27 painted gloss). A ‘multipart’ knight painted in any authentic heraldry of the time costs £29 painted gloss. Mathew advises customers of postage costs on receipt of an order.
